Many of us are by now familiar with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and NFC (Near Field Communications) technology. It’s on your smart card travel pass, your debit card, the loyalty tag you produce to get that ninth coffee free, it’s now increasingly in your mobile phone. But what if you didn’t need an object at all? What if you yourself were the contactless technology? This is what has been done by Dr. Amal Graafstra and a small number of others…. they have implanted themselves with an RFID chip. A flick of the wrist, a pass of the hand, and you gain entry to your house, or start your car. It is clear that the uses and abuses for this kind of technology are huge, but we will leave the ethical discussions to others.
